An ion trap is disclosed comprising a plurality of electrodes 4 which define a toroidal/annular ion trapping volume that extends around a central axis (y, Figure 1), the electrodes being arranged in two parallel arrays on electrode plates 1 & 2. The electrode arrays may be planar or, alternatively, arranged as coaxial and concentric tubular or conical structures (see Figure 3). Ions are confined radially and/or in a direction parallel to the electrode arrays in a DC potential well 5 created by applying DC voltages to the electrodes, while RF/AC voltages are also applied to said electrodes to trap ions between the arrays. Ion are rapidly ejected from ion trap in a non-mass selective manner by, for example, removing at least part of the DC potential well 5 and applying a DC extraction field (8, Figure 2B) to the electrodes. Preferably, ions are non-mass selectively ejected into a downstream ion optical device such as a TOF analyser, ion mobility separator or electrostatic ion trap.
|
