PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively obtain a raw material for filter capable of effectively adsorbing and removing fine grain, etc., especially tar, nicotine having a large specific surface area. SOLUTION: The spinning dope obtained by dissolving cellulose ester in a solvent is discharged through a spinning nozzle 2 into a mixing cell 5 and simultaneously steam is discharged into the mixing cell 5 in an angle of 0-90 degree to the discharging line (1) of the cellulose ester spinning dope allowing the cellulose ester to coagulate under the shearing stream in the mixing cell 5. The coagulated cellulose ester, solvent and steam are discharged into water or coagulating liquid consisting of water and solvent to afford the raw material for filter comprising fibril or film shaped cellulose ester of 0.1 to 50μm of width, 10μm to 10mm of length, having 5wt.% or more of fibril or film shaped cellulose ester having length more than 1000μm with branched structure.
