PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image reading system capable of reading out an original by resolution larger than the physical resolution of a line sensor, shortening reading time and reducing manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: A main scanning direction interpolation means included in a personal computer(PC) 4 interpolates pixels in a main scanning direction by image processing to improve resolution. A subscanning direction interpolation means included in a scanner 2 moves a carriage by micro-steps in a subscanning direction. Since an original can be read out by resolution more than the physical resolution of a line sensor, an original image of high resolution can be read out. Since the interpolating processing of pixels in the main scanning direction is executed by the PC 4, the scanner 2 is not required to be provided with a RAM and an exclusive chip. Thereby the manufacturing cost of the scanner 2 can be reduced, an interpolation processing speed can be improved and the reading time of an original can be shortened.
