PURPOSE: Provided are a silicon nitride member which exhibits little deterioration in strength even when a substrate thereof is coated with a hard film, and exhibits excellent resistance to chipping and wear resistance, a method for manufacturing the same, and a cutting tool. CONSTITUTION: The silicon nitride member comprises a substrate(3) formed by sintering a silicon nitride material, and a hard film(5) formed on a surface of the substrate, wherein the strength of said substrate measured before said substrate is coated with the hard film is taken as 100%, the strength of the silicon nitride member measured after the substrate is coated with the hard film is 70% to 95%. And, the change in the weight of the substrate(3) associated with sintering is 1.5-3.5 wt%. |
