The wetting and penetrating capacity of alkaline mercerizing baths is increased by adding to the baths a p-cymene sulphamide, a mono- or di-carboxylic acid of a mono- or poly-cyclic terpene, and a solution promoter, i.e. a substance commonly used in mercerizing to keep in solution in the bath additions which would otherwise be insufficiently soluble. Specified solution promoters are phenols such as phenol, a cresol or cresol mixture or a xylenol, aliphatic alcohols containing not more than three carbon atoms, such as methyl or ethyl alcohol, and highly sulphonated oils. Specified terpenecarboxylic acids are bornylenecarboxylic acid, campholic acid, isocampholic acid, fencholic acid, oxyfencholic acid, hydropinenecarboxylic acid, sabinenic acid, camphoric acid, and cineolic acid. A small proportion of a hydrocarbon of the benzene series, particularly p-cymene, may also be added to the baths. In the examples, mercerizing baths are described containing specified proportions of (1) fencholic acid, a p-cymene sulphamide, and crude cresol; (2) bornylenecarboxylic acid, a p-cymene sulphamide, crude cresol and ethyl alcohol; (3) dl-campholic acid, a p-cymene sulphamide, crude cresol, ethyl alcohol and p-cymene.
