OPTICAL MODULATOR ELEMENT AND OPTICAL DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small and highly functional optical modulator element and optical device.

SOLUTION: The optical modulator element 101 is provided with an optical waveguide 103 parranged on the principal surface of a substrate 102. The optical waveguide 103 is constituted by alternately providing constant refractive index parts 104 and variable refractive index parts 105 consisting of an electrooptical material. The optical waveguide 103 is changed so as to function as a mirror or a transparent body against incident light by switching coincidence/non-coincidence of refractive indices of the variable refractive index parts 105 and the constant refractive index parts 104 according to electric fields applied between a waveguide electrode and a rear electrode. Thereby, fixed intensity light made incident to the optical waveguide 103 can be optically modulated, for example, to a pulse signal.
