PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic field generator having a magnetic shield capable of preventing a leakage of the magnetic field outside from the generator, and securely supporting a superconducting coil with maintaining the number of arranged supporting members a few and its cross sectional area small. SOLUTION: The magnetic field generator comprises a plurality of superconducting coils 15a to 15d for generating a horizontal magnetic field, a magnetic shield 12 which houses the coils 15a to 15d and prevents the magnetic field from the leakage outside from the generator, a coil holding member 20 which is housed in the shield 12 and holds the coils 15a to 15d, and a supporting member 16 arranged between the shield 12 and the member 20 for supporting the member 20 against the shield 12.
