<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photo interrupter that is high in sensitivity and reliability while enabling miniaturization and mass production, and to provide the manufacturing method thereof. <P>SOLUTION: The photo interrupter is provided with a light emitting side internal element 1 on which a light emitting chip 1a is mounted; a light receiving side internal element 2 on which a light receiving chip 2a is mounted; and a case 4 retaining the internal element 1 and the internal element 2, so that the light extraction surface 1d of the internal element 1 and the light receiving surface 2d of the internal element 2 are opposed through a predetermined gap 3, and provided with slits 5<SB>l</SB>, 5<SB>p</SB>for guiding the wave of light from the internal element 1 to the internal element 2 at the side of the gap 3.
