1312746 Electron beam apparatus FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 2 Sept 1971 [3 Sept 1970] 41069/71 Heading H1D A recording material for recording an image formed by an electron beam comprises a support coated with a film-forming polymer, N-vinylcarbazole, tetrabromoethane and a leucomethylene blue having the formula wherein R represents a phenyl group or naphthyl group which is unsubstituted or substituted by a halogen atom, an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or an alkoxyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The film-forming polymer may be gelatine, polyvinylalcohol, carboxymethylcellulose, starch, casein, gum arabic, hydroxyethylcellulose or polyvinylpyrrolidone, and the support may be baryta paper, resin-coated paper, cellulose acetate film or polyethylene terephthalate film. The weight ratio of leucomethylene blue to N-vinylcarbazole should be between 1 : 100,000 and 1 : 10, preferably between 1 : 10,000 and 1 : 1000, the ratio of tetrabromoethane to N- vinylcarbazole should be between 1 : 50 and 50 : 1, preferably between 1 : 5 and 5 : 1, and the ratio of film-forming polymer to the sum of N-vinylcarbazole and tetrabromoethane should be between 1 : 100 and 20 : 1, preferably between 1 : 10 and 20 : 1. In one example 4 g. of gelatine is swollen in 15 ml. of water and then dissolved at 40-50‹ C. 2À5 g. of N-vinylcarbazole is added and the mixture stirred at 70-72‹ C. after which 2À5 g. of tetrabromoethane and 3 mg. of benzoyl leucomethylene is added and the mixture again emulsified and then coated on to baryta photographic support paper and dried in a dark room. After exposure to 50 kV electrons at a beam density of 10-11 to 10-7 A/cm.2 for 1 to 100 seconds, the material is exposed for 2 seconds through a red filter to a 300 W flood lamp and then kept at 70‹ C. for 10 seconds. In modifications the benzoyl leucomethylene blue is replaced by p-methylbenzoyl leucomethylene blue or by naphthoyl leucomethylene blue (Examples 2 and 4), and the gelatine is replaced by polyvinyl alcohol (Example 3).
