The invention relates to an hinge assembly of the butt hinge type in which a pair of plates (11, 12) having interdigitated knuckles (13, 14) are coupled by a pintle (18) extending in aligned openings (15) therein. The spacing between contiguous knuckles (13) on one plate (11) is greater than the length of a knuckle (14) on the other plate (12) received therebetween, and the relative positions of the plates (11, 12) in the assembly is determined by spacer elements (16) disposed between adjacent knuckles (13, 14).
