A tube bending process employs a die having a truncated cone-shaped passage terminating in a throat, formed with a stepp section and a shallow section directly opposite the steep section, and designed so that the max. die inlet angle (Ix) is not >40 degrees and the die tilt angle (T) is not 20 degrees and >0 degrees and less than the cone angle (C), where Ix = C + T, T is the angle between the die centreline and the entering tube centreline and C is the angle between the surface of the cone and the die centreline. The process comprises pushing the tubing through the die passage to subject it to circumferential swaging forces causing redn. in the tube outer dia., varying from a max. where it encounters the steepest section and to subject it to an offset of die forces producing a couple or force moment, to a min. where it encounters the shallow section to cause bending of the tube about the shallow section, and allowing the tube to bend without restraint beyond the throat. The process issued to produce high quality bends, correct undesirable eccentricity or create desirable eccentricity in tubes of metal or plastics.
|
