The water softening unit is adjusted by the amount of brine supplied from a salt storage container for the regeneration of the ion exchanger. The dishwasher is operable with the following part programmes: pre-rinse, washing, intermediate rinses, clear rinse, dry, supply of brine for regeneration of the ion exchanger and the addition of a back flushing water amount for the rinsing out of the hardening constituent from the regenerated ion exchanger. The part programme for the addition of the back flushing for this rinsing out is controllable depending on the switch position of the water hardness switch.
