PURPOSE:To provide a typewriter capable of automatically correcting an overprinted character in a single stroke by operating a correction key one time. CONSTITUTION:When automatically correcting a printed character, a printing head is located at a half printing position (K+3)h by operating a backspace key BS, a half back space key HBS or the like, and a correction key 2d is operated one time. A printing-controlling circuit 3 outputs a correction driving signal EDS to a correcting mechanism 6 in response to a correction command signal ES, thereby locating a correction medium 6a on the front side of the half printing position (K+3)h, sequentially reads character codes CC correspond ing to printing characters '.' and 'A' from an address in a memory 5 corre sponding to the half printing position (K+3)h, and outputs printing signals PS to a printing mechanism 4. The mechanism 4 sequentially brings types corre sponding to the printing characters '.' and 'A' into a correcting action through the correction medium 6a, thereby automatically correcting the overprinted character 'A'.
