The application of spherical contact elements in fluidised-bed scrubbers for the purification of dusty exhaust gases leads to frequent operating faults, e.g. as a result of non-uniform distribution of the spheres or pulses as a result of spasmodically changing gas distribution. Consequences of these are reduced absorption efficiency and dust separation efficiency and more intense abrasion of the spherical contact elements. The novel contact elements are intended to make possible more efficient purification of the gas with significantly longer service life of the individual elements. The contact elements according to the invention comprise plastic hollow bodies in the form of ellipsoids (30) having a semiaxial ratio of 1 : 1.2 to 1 : 10. The wall thickness of the ellipsoids (30) continuously increases from the axis (32) of rotation up to the equator (31), so that an annular thickening is formed at the equator (31). As a result of this characteristic shape, the fluidising of the bed is achieved even at low gas-intake velocities. As a result of the constant change between detachment and renewal of the scrubbing liquid film, a very high exchange surface is permanently offered. The number of the contact elements in the fluidised-bed scrubber and thus the pressure drop can be significantly reduced. The life of the contact elements is at least doubled. <IMAGE>
