The invention relates to a rotary-piston engine with two pairs of pistons rotating in an annular housing 1, 2, 3, 4. One of the pairs of pistons, which is made extremely light-weight, executes a relative to-and-fro movement. As a result of this movement, the 4 strokes of an internal combustion engine - suction - compression - combustion - exhaust are achieved after a rotation of the main shaft 8 of 90 degrees in each case between the two pairs of pistons. The movement itself is brought about by two toothed quadrants, which are seated on a countershaft 14 driven by the main shaft 8, by virtue of alternate engagement into two gearwheels 17, 18 which are mounted on a hollow shaft 11 coaxially to the main shaft 8.
