An RF terminating impedance which allows a load having a complex characteristic impedance, which is not known in advance or is known only approximately, to be simulated, consists of the series connection of an adjustable attenuating element (which virtually represents a pure resistance) and an adjustable reactance. This RF terminating impedance can be used as a variable error standard which also allows the production of a complex reflection factor, in the case of which the magnitude and the phase can be varied independently of one another.
