<p>Brain tissues of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease show characteristic lesions, including those called neurofibrillary tangles. The tangles comprise dense accumulations of paired helical filaments (PHFs). This invention provides a pronase-resistant PHF core which remains after removal of peripheral PHF constituents by pronase. Unlike whole PHFs, the PHF core provides an antigen uniquely associated with neurofibrillary tangles. The invention includes antibodies to the PHF core useful in immunoassays for the core and further includes the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease using such an immunoassay.</p> |
