The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a viral polypeptide responsible for post-transfusion non- A non-B hepatitis (PT-NANBH), which involves cloning or synthesizing a DNA sequence that codes for an antigen having an amino acid sequence which is at least 90% homologous with the amino acid sequence given in the sequence identified by SEQ ID NO: 3, 4, 5, 18, 19, 20, 21 or 22, or an antigenic fragment thereof, inserting the DNA sequence into an expression vector such that it can be expressed in a suitable host, transforming a host cell with the expression vector, culturing the transformed host cell, and isolating the viral polypeptide.
