A process for preparing 2-hydroxy methyl pyridine derivs. of formula (I) comprises (a) preparing N-oxide deriv. of formula (III) from 2-methyl pyridine deriv. of formula (II), (b) nitrating (III) to form nitropyridine deriv. of formula (IV), (c) reacting (IV) in anhydrous acetic acid to form 2-acetoxy methyl pyridine N-oxide deriv. of formula (V), and (d) methoxylating (V) in MeOH soln. and hydrolyzing it to form (I). In the formulas, R=H or methyl.
