The inductive sensor has a dished housing (1) with an opening (10) receiving a permanent magnet (7) between 2 pole shoes enclosed by a circular cross-section coil (14) carried by a coil former (12). The packet (6) provided by the permanent magnet and the pole shoes has a rectangular cross-section, with the coil former fitted around it and having a slot in its inner mantle surface receiving a projection (11) extending from the base (2) of the housing.Pref. the projection engages the permanent magnet and pole shoe packet on the opposite side to that engaging the inner mantel surface of the coil former.
