The invention relates to a device for compacting manure, characterised in that it comprises a cylindrical compacting chamber (19) delimited over at least one portion of its periphery by a grill (6) for filtering the manure, at least one pipe (18) for supplying the manure into the compacting chamber (19), a compacting screw (5) making it possible to filter the manure through the grill (5) while compacting it against one of the ends (20) of the chamber (19) so as to permit the formation of a plug of dry materials, a motor (2) controlling the rotation of the screw, at least one chamber for recovering the filtrate (16), a closure piece (12) for the end (20), means (9) for positioning the closure piece (12) enabling the latter to adopt a first position in which the end (20) is open and a second position in which the end (20) is closed, and means for controlling the said positioning means (9) enabling the latter to open the said end (20) when the motor (2) encounters resistance to the rotation of the screw (5) in excess of a predetermined value, so as to discharge the plug of dry materials and to reclose the end (20) when the plug has been discharged. <IMAGE>
