A coupling device allows glass fibre to be coupled to a dielectric waveguide integrated on a substrate. The object of the invention is to produce a cost-effective coupling device with low-loss and low-back-scatter. This object is achieved by reducing the end of the glass fibre -- principally, by drawing the fibre under heat exposure until breakage -- to a diameter in the order of typical core dimensions of dielectric waveguides, and by providing on the substrate a fibre receiving portion that reduces in its dimensions in a similar way and changes at its tip into the waveguide to be coupled. Assembly only involves inserting the glass fibre into the fibre receiving portion as far as possible. The fibre centres itself in the waveguide as it is inserted. The tolerances in the fibre geometry do not lead to the level of loss encountered with the prior art front face coupling method.
