Filter for removing harmful substances and algae nutrients from water for aquariums or fish ponds

A method for improving the quality of water in aquariums, garden ponds or similar areas of non-running water, comprises passing the water through a removable filter material and providing a source of energy for microorganisms so that a good supply of oxygen will result in an unrestrained formation of biomass by the microorganisms. Also claimed are: (1) a similar method using a removable filter material that acts as the energy source, and (2) a device for either of these methods, comprising a filter material contained in an easy to replace filter cartridge.
