The press has upper and lower movable pistons, press chamber and filling disc for filling press chamber, moving vertically to movement axes of pistons. The filling disc movement is divided into several sections, each of which has a predetermined movement end point, movement direction and movement speed. A highly resolving path measurement system (40) registers the filling disc movement. The movement of the lower piston (22) is controlled and/or regulated dependent upon the achieved movement end point of the filling disc (38). The movement of the upper piston (26) is controlled and/or regulated dependent upon the achieved movement end points of the filling disc and the lower piston. The speed and a first end point of the movement of the upper piston can be predetermined.
