The automatic transmission has a voice input device (11) which converts the driver's voice signal into an electrical audio signal. A first signal converter (13) digitises the audio signal. A gear change controller (2) produces control data which enables a gear to be changed by reading the signal from the converter and detecting the speech signal data when corresp. speech signal data are held in previously stored data. A second converter (31) outputs a control signal after converting the control data from the gear change controller into an analogue signal. A control element (33) operates connected mechanical parts according to the signal from the controller. A position sensor determines the position of the control element and outputs a signal to the controller. A blocking switch (34) is switched by the control element's movement.
