A step-down transformer comprises magnetic subassembly (45) made up of a magnetic circuit (12) with primary and secondary windings connected to terminals (18), a molded plastic shell (20) to receive the subassembly, and molten resin which is poured into the shell to cover the subassembly completely. The viscosity of the resin is selected to cover all faces of the subassembly with no air bubbles. After the resin has been poured into the shell the latter is closed by a cover plate (56) with anchoring elements (58) in the form of vertical plates which act as non-separable reinforcing elements once the resin has hardened. The casing has vertical ribs (48) to assist positioning of the subassembly and cover plate, the latter having notches (60) in its edges to interact with the ribs.
