PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer having nucleus-substituted styrene units industrially advantageously by reacting a polymer having hydroxystyrene units with a sulfonic acid ester to convert at least a part of the hydroxyl groups of the hydroxystyrene units into ether moieties corresponding to the alcohol moieties of the sulfonic acid ester. SOLUTION: The sulfonic acid ester that is reacted with the polymer having hydroxystyrene units is desirably one represented by the formula: R1-SO2O-R (wherein R1 is a 1-6C alkyl, a phenyl, or a 1-6C alkoxyl, any of which may be substituted; and R is a 1-20C alkyl that may form a ring or may be substituted). When such a sulfonic acid ester is used, at least part of the hydroxystyrene units are converted into alkoxystyrene units represented by the formula. The reaction solvent used is desirably a polar organic solvent such as a ketone.
