PURPOSE: A semiconductor memory device and a method for coding a signal of the same are provided to reduce the number of a transmission line by transmitting various signals to the transmission line. CONSTITUTION: A transmission portion(10) has a pulse width controller(11) and a pulse generator(12). The pulse width controller(11) is used for selecting a width of an output pulse according to a state of a transmitting signal. The pulse generator(12) is used for applying pulses corresponding to the selected width to a transmission line according to a reference clock. A reception portion(30) is formed with a pulse rising edge detector(31), an N-pulse generator(32), and a pulse decoder(33). The pulse rising edge detector(31) is used for reading a time point of a received pulse and outputting an internal reference clock. The N-pulse generator(32) is used for delaying the internal reference clock and outputting a decoding pulse. The pulse decoder(33) is used for comparing an output of the N-pulse generator(32) with a signal received from the transmission line and outputting different states of n number.
