PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rack and pinion steering system capable of not making a driver and an occupant feel uncomfortable and not inhibiting a steering property by reducing hammering sound, frictional sound and frictional resistance even when a rack guide consisting of a roller which is brought into rolling contact is used. SOLUTION: The rack and pinion steering system 1 comprises a gear case 3 having a hollow part 2, a steering shaft 6 rotatably supported on the gear case 3 via rolling bearings 4, 5, a pinion 7 disposed in the hollow part 2 and provided integrally with a shaft end of the steering shaft 6, a metallic rack bar 9 formed with a rack tooth 8 which meshes with the pinion 7, and a rack guide means 10, disposed in the hollow part 2 of the gear case 3, for slidably supporting the rack bar 9.
