PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat bed type image scanner in which the installed area at longitudinal placing is saved, the layout of which can freely be made and the handling of which is easy. SOLUTION: Switches 11 for scanner operation and cable connection connectors 12 are placed on one face 2c being an upper side of the scanner 1 altogether. Or the switches 11 and the connectors 12 are placed in duplicate on faces 2d, 2e acting like a front side or a rear side when the scanner 1 is placed, the switches 11 are placed on the upper face 2c, and the connectors 12 are placed in duplicate on the faces 2d, 2e. Or the connectors 12 are placed on the upper face 2c and the switches 11 are placed in duplicate on the faces 2d, 2e. The cables are connected and the scanner is operated independently of the directivity of the scanner 1 in this way so as to enhance the degree of freedom of layout and handling of the scanner 1.
