PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the ease of use of an apparatus deteriorates when a compressed signal by a plurality of coding systems is to be recorded on the same record medium. SOLUTION: Before the compression coding of an image signal at a coding section 1, a flag signal at the last section in a compression signal being recorded at the record medium 3 is read, and the flag signal is detected by a flag detection section 4. Then, when it is detected that only the compression signal by the SD mode has been recorded by the flag detection section 4, control is made so that the coding mode in the coding section 1 becomes the SD mode. Conversely, when it is detected that only the compression signal by the MPEG mode has been recorded, control is made to set the coding mode by the coding section 1 to the MPEG mode, thus preventing mixed recording of compressed signals by different coding modes.
