PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium wherein durability, shelf properties and high density recording characteristics are improved by improving a thermal shrinkage ratio and suppressing curl (warpage). SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium wherein a magnetic layer formed by dispersing ferromagnetic powder in a binder is provided on a non-magnetic substrate, the non-magnetic substrate is a polyester substrate and a difference between a peak intensity ratio of a gauche structure to a trans structure obtained by an ATR-FT-IR method on the front surface of the polyester substrate and that on the rear surface is≤0.030 as an absolute value and the shrinkage ratio of the magnetic recording medium after the magnetic recording medium is preserved for a week under the condition of 70°C and 5% RH is≤0.040%.
