PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder/reproducer which is controlled to operate stably using a single remote controller by providing an exclusive use operation mode in both the body and the peripheral apparatus, and also to provide the remote controller. SOLUTION: The remote controller 6 comprises: keys for exclusive use in a first mode; keys being used in both first and second modes; a key 63 for altering the control mode from the first mode to the second mode; a section 7 for emitting light from a code in response to depression of the exclusive use key or the key for both modes; and a section 8 for controlling the light emitting section to transmit a continuous code meaning the key code of a depressed key and continuous depression when the exclusive use key or the key for both modes is depressed continuously in the first mode, and to transmit only the key code of the exclusive use key when the exclusive use key is depressed continuously in the second mode.
