Luminescence detection of surface discontinuities comprises successive treatment with penetrant, cleaning fluid, and developer and inspection in U.V. light. The penetrant comprises either (i) 45-55 vol.% ditolymethane, 35-45 vol. % lower aliphatic alcohol, 8-12 vol.% nonionogenic surfactant and 7-9g/l. 1,8-naphthoylene-1',2'-benzimidazole or (ii) 15-20 vol.% high molec. aromatic hydrocarbons of b.pt. 700 degrees C, 80-85 vol.% paraffin of b.pt. 120-240 degrees C. The cleaning fluid comprises 70-90 vol.% lower aliphatic alcohol and 10-30 vol.% nonionogenic surfactant. The developer comprises either (i) 35-45 vol.% acetone, 25-35 vol.% white enamel based on collodion cotton, and 25-35 vol.% collodion or (ii) 37-41 vol.% Na-form bentonite clay, 20-24 vol.% lower aliphatic alcohol, 37-41 vol.% water, 56-60g/l. kaolin, 3.4-3.7g/l. nonionogenic surfactant and 2.4-2.8g/l. NaNO2. Cracks, oxide films, pores and blowholes are detected with enhanced sensitivity (for defects 1-4 mu m wide by >=30 mu m deep), adequate contrast and reliability, high inspection processability and higher efficiency of inspection. The method is partic. useful in inspecting critical parts made from metal, ceramics glass and the like during prodn. and in use.
|
