Metallising non-metallic substrates - using pretreatment with vienna white and nitric acid, and post-heat treatment

Non-metallic articles are metallised by sensitising, activating with a palladium dichloride soln and chemical plating, the articles being treated with Viennese lime (1:1 mixt of CaO and MgO) and then with nitric acid before sensitising. Activating is carried out using a soln contg. palladium dichloride and sodium chloride, and after metallisation the articles are heated to 300-650 degrees C pref. in a noble gas atmos or in vacuum. Glass, ceramics, semiconductors, plastics and minerals may be metallised esp for electrical and electronic equipment e.g. for prodn of integrated circuits, printed circuits, etc.
