PURPOSE:To obtain a carbamate useful as a raw material for isocyanates, with a high selectivity, by reacting a carbonate with a primary or secondary amine in the presence of a catalytic amount of an organotin compound. CONSTITUTION:A carbonate, e.g. dimethyl carbonate, is reacted with a primary or secondary amine, e.g. ariline, in the presence of an organotin compound of the formula (R is alkyl or aryl group; X is O, halogen, alkoxy, aryloxy group, etc.; l is 1 and m is 2 when X is; l is 0, 1, or 2 when m is 1) in the liquid phase at 100-200 deg.C under atmospheric pressure for 0.1-24 hr to give the objective compound, e.g. methyl carbanilate. Di-n-butyl dichlorotin or di-n-butylethoxytin may be cited as the organotin compound, and the amount is 0.001-0.2 mole per mole of the carbonate depending on its type and reaction conditions to some extent. |
