The lance (12) of the soot blower is disclosed as having a square cross section extending through a square hole in a rotating bushing (18). The lance is reciprocated into and out of a furnace cavity by means of a carriage (46) positioned through a rack (48) and pinion (47) and rotated by means of a first spracket (20) and a chain (32) linking motive means (31) and lance structure (12). A second sprocket (55), a second chain (51) and a third sprocket (50) constitute part of the linkage between the lance structure (12) and the pinion (47).
