PURPOSE:To enable to print in one direction by using a ribbon and to print in both directions by using a transfer paper, by a construction wherein the active connection between a gear rotated in company with a movement of a carriage and a gear for rotating a ribbon spool in one direction can be released. CONSTITUTION:In the case of printing by using the ribbon, concurrently with a rightward movement of a main body 5 of the carriage, a driving gear 33 engaged with a driving belt 15 is rotated by a predetermined amount, the rotation is transmitted to a driven gear 19 through intermediate gears 34, 38, 37, and a one-way clutch 20 permits a spool shaft 17 to rotate in a direction for taking up the ribbon. When the head 8 is located at a printing position after a carriage-returning operation, an engaging part 39 of a releasing lever 35 is engaged to a slant surface 11a of the head, and the lever 35 is turned clockwise, thereby separating the gear 33 from the intermediate gear 38. In the case of reciprocal printing by using a thermal transfer printing paper, the gear 34 and the gear 38 are separated from each other by the function of a coil spring 41 at the time of a leftward movement of the carriage 5, and the carriage 5 is smoothly moved. |
