A spinnable polyamide is produced by contacting a dinitrile, an alipathic diamine, excess water, and a catalytic amt. of an O2-contg. P-compound in a reaction vessel. Pref. the dinitrile is adiponitrile; the diamine is hexamethylene diamine; and the polymide is polyhexamethylene adipamide. The catalyst used is phosphoric acid, phosphorus acid, phenyl phosphonic acid, phinyl phosphinic acid, or their ammonium or ammonium alkyl salts. The reaction esp. comprises 2 or more continuous stages in a reaction cascade, heated to more than 150 deg.C, and pressurized to super-atmos. pressure. NH3 is continuously removed from the reaction vessel.
