PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress a required processing time while one determination processing unit determines whether or not a read manuscript is a specific manuscript.SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus 1 includes: a first reading unit 23 which reads a first page of the manuscript at a first position of a carriage path, to generate a first image; a second reading unit 24 which reads a second page of the manuscript at a second position of the carriage path behind the first position of the carriage path, to generate a second image; an image synthesis unit 45 which superposes the first image with the second image to generate a composite image; and a pattern detection unit 46 which detects a characteristic pattern of the specific manuscript from the composite image generated by the image synthesis unit 45.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
