PURPOSE:To make the high-speed read possible against the external power supply on the one hand, by changing the quantity of light of the light source and the scanning speed of an original in employing the power supply from the outside or in employing the built-in one as power supply by reader to make the built-in power supply as long life which maintaining the read accuracy. CONSTITUTION:An original (0) is put between a carrier 30, and passed in the rectiangular direction and in the longitudinal direction of frame as indicated with an arrowhead A in a clearance g. By a guide section on a lower frame 1b, the carrier 30 is set, and after an upper frame 1a is closed, by manually sliding the carrier A in the A direction, the original is radiated by the light source 21, and the reflected light reads the original through an LIS20. The power source is normally driven by a built-in battery, however, when the external power supply is connected, it is detected by a detection cricuit 18, and when this EXTP signal is detected, a controller switches over the power supply of a power source drive circuit 30, and in case it is operated by the built-in power supply, the light source power supply is lowered, and only in case of external current the current is made to increase.
