PURPOSE:To recover quinoline from a quinoline-containing fraction produced by the distillation of coal tar, economically, by distilling out methylnaphthalene from the fraction by the azeotropic distillation with a specific amount of a polyalkylene glycol, and carrying out the superfractionation of the bottom oil. CONSTITUTION:A quinoline-containing fraction K produced by the distillation of coal tar is added with 0.2-5 times weight of a polyalkylene glycol L (e.g. diethylene glycol), and distilled to remove the methylnaphthalene having boiling point close to quinoline from said fraction K by azeotropic distillation 4. A bottom oil 5 almost free from methylnaphthalene can be obtained by this process. The bottom oil 5 is subjected to the superfractionation 14 to obtain high- purity quinoline 18 with simple process in high yield. When the concentrated quinoline fraction is collected in the above superfractionation 14 and subjected again to the superfractionation, quinoline having higher purity can be recovered.
