3,4,5-Trihydroxypiperidine derivatives of the formula <IMAGE> where R1, R1', R2, R2', R3 and R3' denote hydrogen or a direct linkage to X, with the proviso that one and only one of the groups R1, R2 and R3 and one and only one of the groups R1', R2' and R3' denotes a direct linkage to X, and X denotes a grouping A-Y-A, in which A denotes CH2, CH2-NH-CO, CH2-NHCONH, CH2-NH-SO2 or CH2- NHCS-NH, and Y denotes -(CH2)n-, where n is 1-10, <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE> <IMAGE> or SO2, are prepared by reacting compounds of the formula <IMAGE> where R1" and R3" denote hydrogen or CH2-NH2, with alkylating agents of the formula R7-Y-R8 where R7 and R8 denote an activated carboxyl- or sulphonic acid group. The compounds of the formula I are suitable for use as agents against diabetes, hyperlipaemia and adiposity.
