A sludge is dewatered and thickened using one or more drainage units which are placed in the sludge pool. Each unit consists of a screened container which is surrounded by the mass of sewage. Liquid is drained into the container while solid particles are retained on the outside of the screen. Liquid is removed from the interior of the container until the desired solids concn. is achieved in the sludge mass. The screen may be cleaned by a rotary flushing system positioned in the drainage unit.
