PURPOSE:To obtain a device which maintains high contrast even in case of using a high-order time-division driving system by specifying the angle of torsion of liquid crystal molecules of a liquid crystal composite body arranged between a couple of substrates and the relation between the elastic contrast in the torsion direction and bending direction of the liquid crystal composite body. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display is constituted by arranging the liquid crystal composite body between the couple of substrates 1 and 2 which have orientation film respectively; and the angle alpha of torsion of liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal composite body arranged between the couple of substrates is 160-250 deg. and k33/k23>=3.0 holds for the elastic constant k22 in the torsion direction of the liquid crystal composite body and the elastic constant in the bending direction. When the angle alpha of torsion is <=160 deg., varia tion in the intensity of transmitted light to an applied voltage is slow and suffi cient contrast is not obtained during high-order time-division driving. When the angle 3a of torsion is >250 deg., the array of liquid crystal molecules is easily disordered during on-off switching to cause deterioration in display quality or slow down the response speed of on-off operation due to large bistable effect.
