A granular drug formulation consists of a drug, a polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and a disintegrating agent. PVP is present in high concn. on the granule surface. This forms a rapidly -dissolving formulation which may be coated with a polyacid which forms a complex with the polyvinylpyrrolidone to give an enteric -coated granule which dissolves only slowly. The rapid-dissolving and enteric-coated granules may be combined in a composite formulation. The disintegrating agent may be a cellulose hydroxypropyl ether, with a low degree of substitution, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) or poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone.
