A main actuation drive (8) and a supplementary drive (9) are provided for steering the rear wheels. The self-locking main actuation drive is deactivated when its control device (22) detects a fault. The rear wheels are then steered by the self-locking-free supplementary drive (9) which produces in each case an actuation force which varies with the actuation force of a servo unit (16) of the front wheel steering system. <IMAGE>
