In a process for purifying 7-chlor-quinoline-8-carboxylic acids of formula (I) (where X = H, halogen, lower alkyl group) by recrystallization from lower alcohols miscible with water, the recrystallization is carried out in the presence of small quantities of a base. The quinoline carboxylic acids of formula (I) are useful plant protection agents.
