A mechanical counter has a series of numbered rollers (2) supported on a central shaft (5) and linked together by transfer gears (3) to provide a decimal incrementing action. The input to the counter is provided by a pawl (10) that is pivot mounted (9) and which acts against a toothed ratchet wheel (4). The pawl has permanent magnet inserts (11,12) which in the at-rest position, provide a latching action with the claw (13) holding the ratchet wheel. When an externally located magnet (14) is moved near the counter, the pawl moves through an arc to release the wheel which is then incremented by a second claw (15).
