Hydrocarbon mix. having a maximum b.pt. of 70-90 deg.C and comprising: 40-80 wt.% paraffins; 6-45 wt.% aromatics; and 0.9-7 wt.% naphthenics, is treated with a catalyst comprising: a) refractory oxide matrix; b) at least one halogen; c) at least one platinum metal; and d) opt. at least one extra metal selected from Sn, Ge, In, Pb, Ga, Tl or a metal of group I, VI, VII or VIII. Gp. I metal is Cu, Au or Ag; gp. VI metal is Cr, Mo or W; g. VII metal is Rh; gp. VIII metal is Ni, Ru or Fe. Catalyst comprises 0.1-15 wt.% (b); 0.01-2 wt.% c); and 0.005-2 wt.% Sn or 0.005-0.7 wt.% of d) other than Sn. Matrix is alumina. Treated mix can be light fraction from reformate or derived from any other process. Process is carried out at 100-400 deg.C and 1-7MPa with a volumetric flow rate of 0.2-10 hr-1 and using a molar ratio of charge to H2 of 0.05-15. ADVANTAGE - Process eliminates essentially all benzene (98% plus claimed) from the mixture, which is still suitable for use in motor fuel.
